Cycling in DC is generally safe, but urban riding comes with unique challenges. From busy intersections to rail tracks and door zones, here are our top tips for staying safe while cycling in Georgetown and the greater DC area.

Be Visible and Predictable

Wear bright or reflective clothing, especially in low light. Use front and rear lights at night — it's the law in DC. Ride in a straight line and avoid sudden movements. Signal your intentions to drivers and other cyclists.

DC has many complex intersections, especially around the National Mall and downtown. Take the lane when approaching intersections — don't ride in the gutter. Make eye contact with drivers before proceeding. Watch for right-turning vehicles.

Rail Tracks and Road Hazards

DC has streetcar tracks on H Street and other areas. Cross tracks at a perpendicular angle to avoid getting your wheel caught. Watch for storm drains, potholes, and road debris. The C&O Canal Towpath can be muddy after rain.

The Door Zone

Ride at least 3 feet from parked cars to avoid being doored. If a bike lane is in the door zone, ride on the left edge of the lane or take the traffic lane. Watch for taillights and heads in parked cars as signs someone might open a door.

Take a Class

WABA offers urban cycling classes that teach safe riding skills. The Washington Area Bicyclist Association is a great resource for learning to navigate DC safely by bike.
