The Washington Area Bicyclist Association (WABA) has been fighting for safer streets and better cycling infrastructure in DC for over 50 years. From protected bike lanes to trail connections, WABA's advocacy has transformed Georgetown and the greater DC area into a more bike-friendly place. Here's how they're making a difference and how you can get involved.
WABA's Key Achievements
WABA has been instrumental in expanding DC's bike lane network, including protected lanes on M Street and Pennsylvania Avenue. They advocated for the Capital Crescent Trail extension and continue to push for better trail connections. Their work on the Anacostia Riverwalk Trail is helping complete the vision of a continuous river loop.
Current Campaigns
WABA is currently focused on completing the Anacostia Riverwalk Trail loop, improving bike infrastructure east of the Anacostia River, and advocating for safer streets around schools. They're also working on better connections between Georgetown's trails and the larger DC network.
How to Get Involved
Join WABA as a member — your dues support advocacy work. Volunteer for trail cleanups and community rides. Attend DC Council hearings and speak up for cycling infrastructure. Sign up for their action alerts to stay informed about opportunities to advocate.
Community Rides and Events
WABA organizes regular community rides throughout the year, including the popular 50 States Ride and Ride for the Rivers. These rides are a great way to meet fellow cyclists while supporting advocacy. They also offer urban cycling classes for riders of all levels.
