The ride from Georgetown to Mount Vernon is one of the most scenic cycling routes in the DC area. Following the Mount Vernon Trail, you'll ride 18 miles along the Potomac River with stunning views of DC monuments, historic Alexandria, and George Washington's estate. Here's how to plan the perfect ride.
Route Overview
Starting at Key Bridge in Georgetown, cross into Arlington and pick up the Mount Vernon Trail. The trail follows the Virginia side of the Potomac south for 18 miles to Mount Vernon. The trail is paved and mostly flat, with some rolling sections.
Key Stops Along the Way
Gravelly Point is a must-stop for plane watching at Reagan National Airport. Old Town Alexandria (mile 10) is perfect for a lunch break with its cobblestone streets and waterfront cafes. The final destination, Mount Vernon, offers beautiful grounds and historic tours.
What to Bring
Pack a bike lock for stops in Old Town Alexandria. Bring water and snacks, though there are plenty of places to refuel along the way. Sunscreen is important as parts of the trail are exposed.
Getting Back
You can ride back (36 miles round trip) or take the Mount Vernon-to-Georgetown water taxi for a scenic return. The water taxi runs seasonally and accommodates bikes.
