Group rides are one of the best ways to explore Georgetown and DC by bike, meet fellow cyclists, and improve your riding skills. But if you've never joined a group ride, it can be intimidating. Here's everything you need to know to get started.
Finding the Right Group Ride
DC has cycling groups for every level. The Potomac Pedalers Touring Club offers rides for all abilities, from beginner-friendly social rides to fast-paced training rides. WABA organizes community rides focused on fun and advocacy. Start with a no-drop social ride labeled 'beginner' or 'casual.'
What to Expect
Most group rides start with a briefing covering the route, pace, and safety rules. No-drop rides ensure nobody gets left behind. The ride leader sets the pace and calls out hazards. Group rides typically end at a coffee shop or brewery for socializing.
What to Bring
Bring a properly maintained bike, helmet, water, spare tube, and basic repair kit. Arrive 15 minutes early to sign in and meet the ride leader. Wear comfortable clothing appropriate for the weather.
Group Ride Etiquette
Communicate hazards by calling them out or using hand signals. Don't overlap wheels with the rider in front of you. Hold your line and ride predictably. If you need to stop, call it out and pull to the side safely.
