The Chesapeake & Ohio Canal Towpath is one of America's great cycling trails. Stretching 184.5 miles from Georgetown to Cumberland, Maryland, this historic trail follows the Potomac River through some of the most beautiful scenery in the Mid-Atlantic. Here's everything you need to know to plan your ride.

Trail Surface and Conditions

The towpath surface is packed dirt and gravel, making it ideal for hybrid bikes, gravel bikes, and mountain bikes. Road bikes with narrow tires are not recommended. The surface is generally well-maintained but can be muddy after rain.

Best Sections for Day Rides

The most popular section is from Georgetown to Great Falls (14 miles one way). This stretch offers historic lock houses, aqueducts, and the stunning Great Falls overlook. For a shorter ride, try Georgetown to Fletcher's Cove (3 miles), where you can rent boats and grab a snack.

What to Bring

Bring plenty of water — services are limited beyond Great Falls. A spare tube, pump, and basic repair kit are essential. The trail is shaded but can be humid in summer, so dress appropriately.

Best Times to Ride

Spring and fall are ideal, with mild temperatures and beautiful foliage. Summer can be hot and humid, while winter offers peaceful, uncrowded riding but requires warm layers.
